Mamma Mia! He’s back!

I couldn’t resist such a light hearted heading! But the fact is that this month at Sands by the Sea our guest, who doubles as Musical Director for the West End production of ‘Mamma Mia’ is also – to most ears – Britain’s greatest jazz pianist and singer! NICK DAWSON makes a welcome return to our venue on a night off from the theatre and occasional duties with drummer Richard Pite’s jazz presentations including ‘A 100 Years of Jazz in 99 Minutes’ where Nick pays tribute to everyone from James P. Johnson, to Fats Waller, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson and just about every other great pianist in the music’s history. And as if that wasn’t enough his singing – recalling great craftsmen-songsmiths like Matt Dennis, Johnny Mercer and their equals – is one of the most well-loved features of our UK jazz scene. Joining Nick will be our regulars – Roger Curphey (bass) and Alan Clarke (drums) – and there’s talk of a surprise guest too! Address as ever is: Icon Building, Adventure Western Esplanade, Southend SS1 1EE; the music (which, thanks to our Patron Philip Miller is FREE!) starts at 8pm and – great news – parking is (once again!!) free too on Southend seafront from 6pm. Thank you Southend Council!! Look forward to seeing you for what I’m sure will be an unforgettable evening!
