ALAN BARNES is back at THE SANDS!

If I had to choose the most creative musician in British jazz right now – a very hard choice indeed! – it might just be Alan Barnes whose ability to laugh at lfe (and regularly himself) hides a creative spirit that has been responsible for some of the most distinguished composition ever in British jazz: his ‘Copperfield’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes’ suites, both celebrating British literary giants, are two typical examples. Inspired originally by the clarinet-playing of ‘Mr’ Acker Bilk (unquestionably one of the world-class jazz clarinettist to come from the UK) Alan has gradually broadened his artistic career to play and record with all the greatest British musicians in his circle as well as many of the best Americans (trumpeters Conte Candoli and Warren Vache Junior are two examples of many). Now recognised as a multi-reed virtuoso (with a special private affection for the baritone saxophone) Alan has lost count of the number of British Jazz Awards he has received on all of them, and tonight we couldn’t be happier to welcome him to The Sands! With Alan will be our regular Rat Pack Trio – Tim Huskisson (piano) Roger Curphey (bass) and Alan Clarke (drums) – and yours truly will join his friend AB for a few standards in part 2. Book early to avoid disappointment on 01702 468123 (AFTER 1.30pm don’t forget!) and parking – like the music – is free on Southend sea front after 6pm! See you there! Can’t wait!
